SOUNDSCAPES

Day creatures

With the variety of sandhill, flatwoods, marshes, swamps, and riparian habitats around Gainesville, we've recorded quite a mix of songbird concerts. The spring of 2022 was particularly blissful and many of the migratory songbirds stayed in the area for several months. Below is a sampling of some of those concerts. See if you can pick out the chik-errr-topikerreerr-chik of a White-eyed Vireo, the clear bob WHITE whistle of a Northern Bobwhite,  the squeaky KEWde of a Brown-headed Nuthatch, the musical three-syllable low whistles of a Summer Tanager, the sharp zeeeeeeeeee-tsup of a Northern Parula, the gentle musical wichety whistle of a Common Yellowthroat, or the rapid trill of a Pine Warbler.

Twilight creatures

Common Nighthawks - Chordeiles minor- migrate through Florida in the late spring. We were fortunate to come across 5 or 6 territorial males on wing over one of our favorite pinelands near Gainesville. As the sun set, the nighthawks became more active and we recorded in late May their BEEErzh vocalizations as well as one of their characteristic Hoooov wing sounds made alongside a display dive.

Barred Owls - Strix varia - are one of the most common raptors to frequent the hardwoods and pines interspersed throughout the Gainesville urban landscape. Frequently, they can be heard making their who-cooks-for-you characteristic call and, occasionally, pairs will gather to chatter back and forth. Below is a recording of the latter, when two pairs conversed nearby.
